Music

Intent

At The Upper Wharfedale Primary Federation, we believe that music is a vital part of a broad and balanced education, fostering creativity, self-expression, and a deep appreciation for cultural diversity. Our music curriculum is designed to inspire and engage
all pupils, providing them with opportunities to develop their musical skills, confidence, and understanding. Through performing, composing, and listening, students will build a lifelong love for music while also developing essential skills such as teamwork,
resilience, and critical thinking.

We actively encourage children’s musical development through a range of performance opportunities, including school concerts, assemblies, and community events. Our Federation choirs and musical performances provide additional chances for pupils to showcase
their talents, build confidence, and develop a passion for music beyond the classroom.

Implementation

Our music curriculum is carefully structured to ensure a progressive development of skills and knowledge. We provide high-quality music lessons that encompass a variety of musical genres, styles, and traditions. Key features of our implementation include:

  • Exciting Music Curriculum for Key Stage 1: Pupils in Key Stage 1 follow an engaging and creative music curriculum that is closely linked to their learning in other subjects, enhancing their understanding and making music a meaningful part of their education.
  • Specialist Teaching for Key Stage 2: As part of our Federation working, Key Stage 2 pupils receive specialist music lessons, ensuring high-quality, expert-led instruction that enhances their musical development.
  • Practical Engagement: Pupils actively participate in singing, instrumental playing, and composition activities.
  • Structured Learning: Lessons follow a clear progression, covering key musical concepts such as rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and notation.
  • Performance Opportunities: We provide numerous chances for pupils to perform, including school concerts, assemblies, and wider community events, helping them build confidence and stage presence.
  • Choirs and Ensembles: Our school choirs and musical groups allow pupils to develop their vocal and instrumental skills in a collaborative and enjoyable setting.
  • Cross-Curricular Links: Music is integrated with other subject to reinforce learning across the curriculum.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Exposure to a wide range of musical styles from different cultures promotes understanding and appreciation of global traditions.

Impact

The success of our music curriculum is reflected in the enthusiasm and confidence of our pupils. By the end of their time with us, students will:

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of musical concepts and apply them in performance and composition.
  • Develop confidence in expressing themselves musically, both individually and in groups.
  • Show appreciation and respect for diverse musical styles and traditions, fostering cultural awareness.
  • Exhibit transferable skills such as teamwork, creativity, and perseverance.
  • Have opportunities to further their musical interests through extracurricular activities, instrument tuition, and performance experiences.
