French in Our Federation: Be the Light – Communicate Confidently, Discover Culture, Connect with the World
French in our Federation opens a window to the wider world, giving children the opportunity to communicate in another language and to develop curiosity about different cultures and ways of life. From their first experiences of learning French, pupils are encouraged to listen carefully, join in confidently, and take pride in using new words and phrases.
As children progress through school, their language skills develop step by step. Our carefully sequenced French curriculum builds pupils’ confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Children learn to communicate for real purposes, using language to describe themselves, ask and answer questions, and talk about everyday life.
French learning in our Federation goes beyond vocabulary and grammar. Pupils explore the culture of French-speaking countries, learning about traditions, festivals, food, music, and daily life. This cultural understanding helps children to appreciate similarities and differences between communities, encouraging openness, respect, and curiosity about the wider world.
Opportunities to use language creatively and practically are woven into the pupils learning. Pupils take part in songs, games, role play, and performances, allowing them to use French in an enjoyable and memorable way. These experiences build confidence, resilience, and a willingness to communicate, even when making mistakes.
French also supports learning across the curriculum. Links are made with geography, history, and RE, helping pupils to understand how language, culture, and identity are connected. By encountering different perspectives, pupils begin to recognise the importance of communication in building relationships and understanding others.
Through French, we aim to equip our pupils with skills that will support future language learning and inspire a lifelong interest in languages. We want our children to be the light by communicating confidently, embracing other cultures, and connecting with people beyond their own community in an increasingly global world.
